This article is about the 6 basic elements of graphic design. Graphic Design are a combination of several elements which helps to communicate directly with prospects. They are used for passing information and building a solid first impression. However, that is only if the elements are arranged and positioned accordingly.

There are several kinds of graphics designs. All have these elements in common even though they can easily be differentiated. But the final reason for all graphics is to make meaningful information from a classification of elements.

Those elements interact with each other in a unique and special way so that they can agree to the characteristics of each graphic design.

The purpose, context, meaning and audience of the designs explain what the elements coming together will look like. In any graphic design project, if you are not taking the elements important, then your graphics might not be reaching its optimum results.

Perhaps if you are able to know about those elements, you will look out for them in each of your graphics. This is the reason I have dedicated this post to explain the elements of graphics designs.

Listed below are the 6 basic elements of graphic design. They influence the day to day activities of a graphics designer.

1. Line

3. Color

4. Texture

5. Type

6. Spacing


Lines are points joined together and continue to progress. That is our basic definition of line in art and graphics. When we look more into it, the line has emotional and psychological purposes enough to converse with another person. There are several kinds of lines depending on several purposes or graphic design.


Each of which is classified under length and context, form, weight etc. While there are also several reasons to go for a particular kind of line.

Apart from our normal straight lines, there are broken lines, curved lines, zig zag lines etc. They are the main character used for forming any shape. Hence, you need a line on your graphics.


There are several shapes in our everyday life which we have known about since elementary level. However, there is more to that because we never learn the meaning of each shape. Shape is one of the elements that describe a good graphics.

It is an enclosure of lines, forms of even boundaries used to specialize something. There are the elementary shapes of square, rectangle, circle, oval etc. Whereas there are other irregular shapes like eclipse, birds and some 3D designs which are used for passing incredible messages.

Let’s see the meaning attached to our daily shapes:

1. Squares- This is a four sided regular shape that signifies balance, dependability, and strength. So, people interpreted a square shale to mean independence and anonymity.

2. Rectangles: Rectangles have 4 sides with each 2 sides serving as a uniform for another. It works in scenarios of strength and dependability.

3. Circles, oval and other round shapes: In this case, these kind of shapes show love, tolerance, harmony, peace and other characteristics like this

4. Triangles: These are three side shapes that show stability, dependability, and organization.

In as much as you would have a shape, then a color is also important to improve the set up of your graphics. There are lots of things to consider when it comes to color. Colors play a big role in graphic design and how humans translate several views. You can’t imagine having everything in white and black.

So, there are a lot of colors as well and they all have their meaning. Meanwhile, those colors have been grouped into primary, secondary and tertiary. They all affect each other and decide which one should be used for a particular section.

Also, mixing of colors can be a bit technical but if you can learn more about color harmonies then you are good to go. Color harmonies are the adaptations of colors together in a color wheel. We all make use of RGB and CMYK colors which are the basic color wheels on our graphics.


Did you ever try touching a certain object molded with a beautiful texture? That’s what is Looks like to have a good texture on a particular graphics. It makes us feel the essence of that graphics in as much as it is used at the required period. It is usually made of natural objects like flowers, sun, grass, soil, etc.

This is normal what we find on our tiles and helps to differentiate having a floor made of normal concrete. Also, there are other kinds of textures where we make use of the likes of 2d and 3d designs. This might be made of either animate, inanimate object or even solid colors.

Type or Typography in graphic design

This is an important element in graphic design. Typography and font needs to be accurate enough on your design. The real deal here is to make sure you have a legible font which is easy for anyone to read and understand. Do not make your letters too thin or too bold such that it will become a destitute graphics to your audience. After choosing your type, your typography, image etc.

Spacing in graphic design

Spacing is also very important to know. This is where you have to make use of the technical positioning. If you can position your colors, images, shapes, text in the right area on any graphics projects, then you will have a balanced result.
